The profession

The job, day to day

The electrician installs and maintains the electrical systems of buildings: consumer units, lighting and socket circuits, protective devices and earthing. The electrician connects equipment, checks that the installation works properly and is called out when faults occur. This work underpins the safety of people and property.

The course starts with the basics of electricity and reading wiring diagrams. You then learn to wire a consumer unit, install circuits, select and fit protective devices, and measure and test an installation. Particular weight is given to safety rules and fault finding, the skills that set a good electrician apart.
