The profession

The job, day to day

Before anything is built, the land must be known. The surveyor measures distances, angles and heights, then turns those measurements into accurate plans. On site, the surveyor sets out: marking on the ground the exact position of foundations, roads or utilities. This work serves architects, engineers, land surveyors and land registry services.

The course teaches you to use the tools of the trade: level, theodolite, total station and GPS receiver. You learn field surveys, calculating coordinates and areas, levelling and setting out structures. You then learn to draw plans on computer, with the drawing and surveying software used by design offices.

Fieldwork alternates with office work. You leave able to assist a land surveyor or an engineer, carry out surveys and setting out, and produce reliable plans for building sites and land developments.
