The job, day to day
The driving instructor teaches people to drive. In the classroom, the instructor covers the highway code and road signs; behind the wheel, the instructor guides the learner step by step, from the first start-up to driving in town and on the open road. The instructor assesses progress, corrects without harshness and prepares the learner for the driving test.
The course gives you both sides of the job. You deepen your knowledge of the highway code, road safety and basic vehicle mechanics. Above all, you learn to teach: building a lesson, explaining clearly, giving confidence to a beginner, keeping control of a dual-control car and assessing a learner fairly.
You leave ready to work in a driving school, to supervise learner drivers and, with experience, to consider opening your own school.
What you will be able to do
Teach the highway code
Road signs, right of way and rules, clearly explained.
Give a driving lesson
A suitable progression, simple instructions and confident use of dual controls.
Assess a learner driver
Measure progress and prepare the learner for the test.
Teach safety reflexes
Anticipation, distances, speed and sharing the road.
Explain basic mechanics
Routine maintenance and pre-departure checks.
