The profession

The job, day to day

Many diseases can be prevented before they ever need treating. The public health engineering technician works where they start: poorly treated water, badly managed waste, a market or canteen that neglects hygiene. The technician inspects, advises and offers practical solutions to local councils, businesses and premises open to the public.

The course gives you the tools of this field-based profession. You learn to assess water quality, design and monitor simple sanitation works, organise waste collection and treatment, and control disease vectors such as mosquitoes and rodents. You also learn how to inspect premises, write a report and raise awareness among the public.

Field visits and a placement bring you face to face with the realities of neighbourhoods, markets and public premises. You leave ready to work for a local council, a hygiene department, a public health project or a business that takes its standards seriously.
