The profession

The job, day to day

The draughtsman turns the architect's or engineer's idea into working drawings that the site can follow: foundations, walls, floors, reinforcement and services. The quantity surveyor calculates the quantities of materials and work, then prepares the cost estimate. Together, these two skills make a valuable team member for any design office or construction company.

The course teaches you to read and draw building plans, by hand and then on computer with technical drawing software. You learn construction techniques and materials, so that your drawings are accurate. You then learn quantity surveying: measuring works from drawings, preparing the bill of quantities, the schedule of rates and the priced estimate.

Case studies cover real building types, from the family house to the apartment block. You leave able to produce a full set of drawings and a complete estimate, and to track quantities during construction.
